Nefarious Parent cartoon by Amy Crook

Nefarious Parent by Amy Crook

When my friend Bkwyrm approached me to ask about doing a logo for her new forum for parents with an occult bent, Parentes Nefarii, we tossed back and forth a couple of ideas. In the end, we decided that her budget and needs were best suited to a cartoon — but not of her. This weeble cultist (yep, Weeble Wednesday is back!) is carrying a rather dubious-looking baby, from tentacles to horns.

The innocent baby-blonde curl of hair really makes it for me, especially contrasted with the bald cultist and his bluer-than-blue eyes.

Nefarious Parent, 7″x5″ pen and ink and Copic Marker on watercolor paper, not for sale (commission). This, and all my other commissions, aren’t for free use per the Creative Commons license below — all rights are reserved for the commissioner*.

Weeble Wednesday: Maribeth Doerr

Maribeth Doerr cartoon by Amy Crook

Maribeth Doerr cartoon by Amy Crook

I actually finished Maribeth’s cartoon months ago, and just haven’t gotten around to posting it, oops.

She got her cartoon as part of with her WordPress Bonanza Package with me & Wendy Cholbi — I’ll be posting her header art next week. I had a lot of fun drawing her weeble self, the warm grin and giant pink bag, along with her very appropriate “Delightfully Silly” t-shirt. I always enjoy drawing ponytails, too, I think it’s the same urge that makes me draw dozens of spirally swishy tentacles.

Weeble Wednesday: Bride of Frankenstein

Bride of Frankenstein cartoon by Amy Crook

Bride of Frankenstein by Amy Crook

I’ve finally colored the very last bonus bride from my Monster Heart Coloring Book. She was so simple to do, I’m not sure why I put her off — just some very subtle light shading and her red-black lipstick and pale skin, really. She makes a lovely companion to Frankenstein’s Monster, and I’m sure he’s eager to give her his heart. Her eyes are even the same green that tinges most of his patchwork skin.

Bride of Frankenstein, 5″x7″ pen and ink and Copic Markers on watercolor paper, $69 with free shipping.

Sherlock and John cartoon by Amy Crook

Sherlock & John by Amy Crook

Just a cheery little cartoon for your Monday – John with his tea and Sherlock in his thinking pose, the two of them content with their lot. I’m thinking of doing a b&w version of this one on a little Moleskine, but for now, you can enjoy an iPhone wallpaper of them, if you like. I am!

Weeble Wednesday: Mycroft Holmes & DI Lestrade

Mycroft Holmes and DI Lestrade cartoons by Amy Crook

Mycroft Holmes and DI Lestrade by Amy Crook

I’ve been trying to give my weebles a little more life, so I took on the challenge of drawing Mycroft Holmes leaning smugly with his umbrella, and the put-upon Detective Inspector Lestrade, both from the 2009 BBC Sherlock.

I also made judicious use of photographic references, which I think really captures the features of these actors – it’s excellent practice for making clients into cartoons and vice versa. A year of working to put other people’s faces into cartoon form has really improved my grasp on what features add the most character.

Cartoon Sherlock & John 2

Cartoon Sherlock & John 2 by Amy Crook

Cartoon Sherlock & John 2 by Amy Crook

I couldn’t resist drawing up full-body color version of my Sherlock & John cartoons, though I’ve rather exaggerated their height difference here. Somehow it just seemed appropriate to make Sherlock a million miles tall and rail-thin compared to the more solid John Watson.

They’re supposed to start filming the new series next month, with new episodes coming out in the fall, and I’m absurdly excited. I’ve been slowly working my way through the original Holmes novels and short stories (in order, of course!), and I always enjoy spotting something from the show in the books, since the writers are both huge Sir Arthur Conan Doyle geeks. It makes me feel a little better about my own fannish obsessions.

Bride of the Mummy by Amy Crook

Bride of the Mummy by Amy Crook

This poor lady was stuck as inks for many weeks, waiting for me to get a refill on my colorless blender so I could properly fade the wear and tear on her bandages. I had fun making her as a counterpart to the Mummy, especially since I gave them opposite eyes freed of bandages.

She’s one of the bonus brides from my Monster Heart Coloring Book, of course, and I have just one illustration left to color before those are all done.

Bride of the Mummy, 5″x7″ pen and ink and Copic markers on watercolor paper. $89 with free shipping.
