Sherlock Snuggle cartoon by Amy Crook

Sherlock Snuggle
by Amy Crook

I started this cute little pair as a sketch for Sunday, but it just begged to be inked and colored. I use art like this on freebie bookmarks to go with my Etsy orders, so I figured the chin-noogies would serve a good purpose. I figured stick-figure Sherlock could basically hide behind his solid John, except of course for being so very much taller. Well, and the coat, but he’s not wearing the coat.

The final bookmark for this week is a silly little doodle made while I was testing out my various colors of glitter gel pen. On the blue-to-white faded background, we’ve got gold filigree, red flame spirals, a purple half of a spiraled crescent moon, more sketchy blue filigree, and swooping green arabesques, plus of course my silver signature. The paper has one natural edge where it came out of the paper mold, called a deckle, and three cut edges to set it off.

Above you can see the light shining off the various colors of glitter – the green got a bit too much sunlight there. Below, the bright white of the paper takes the stage when it’s on the dark blue of this week’s book.

The Tenth Doctor peeks out of the TARDIS, looking quite impish if you ask me. Perhaps he can be your companion on your reading adventures. Or maybe you’ll want him to watch himself with you when the next season starts, though of course he’ll be a whole different Doctor at that point!

Above, you can get a better look at the Doctor’s mischievous expression. Below, he’s hanging out with a book that’s a bit darker than TARDIS blue, but perhaps there’s a better-matching one in your home.

I’m afraid this lovely green tentacle is already sold! If you were on my monthly newsletter list, you, too would have gotten a chance to call dibs on this week’s bookmarks.

I started with this bright yellow wash that fades from perfectly opaque to nothing at all thanks to my nifty water brushes, and then added in apple-green Sharpie marker designs for the tentacle. Remarkably cheerful for an ancient horror!

Above you can really see how the cool yellow interacts with the warm cream of the paper, and the intense green of the marker. Below, it’s looking quite bright next to the deep dark blue of my book.

Seven for a Secret, watercolor landscape by Amy Crook

One for sorrow, two for joy,
Three for a girl and four for a boy,
Five for silver, six for gold,
And seven for a secret never to be told.

Insomnia City

Insomnia City, watercolor by Amy Crook

Insomnia City, watercolor by Amy Crook

I couldn’t sleep the other night, so I pulled out some paper and my new palette of almost-black paints and painted. It started out with similar spiral clouds as Dirigible, but instead of filling up the whole image, I created a stormy blue-grey sky and then painted the city below in a deep, dark plum color. I wanted to give the whole thing a but of surreal whimsy while keeping the feel of a proper skyline, and keeping the buildings from actually running into the clouds. I kind of like how the lower right ended up shadowed by its incoming cloud bank there, too.

Above I turned up the saturation a little so you could see the subtle purple and blue and the contrast between them. Below, you can see the piece in all its muted glory, tucked into its temporary frame and hanging out with my iPhone in the sunshine.

Filigree Planet

Filigree Planet by Amy Crook

Filigree Planet by Amy Crook

And here we have the final piece with the spirals of doom. I was really in love with the planet itself before I got out the pens, and then I was so delighted by the filigree look on Monday’s piece that I decided all the space around this one needed it. It’s slightly less masochistic than the piece I’m still working on with the black pen-and-ink spiral texture, which means it actually got done whereas that one’s back on hold until my wrist forgives me in a few more days.

The warm, bright purple of the glitter stands out much more clearly on the black paper, in the way of these things, framing this richly textured planet with whimsical spirals. There’s a very subtle bit sheen to the dark salt crystals that formed as the piece dried, but it’s very subdued compared to the bright glittery “stars” surrounding the planet.

I first painted the actual periwinkle wash, then I took a darker, warmer violet and dripped it wetly onto the still-damp wash. Finally, I added a few drips of salt water to the mix and, after a bit more interference, let the whole thing dry. The spirals came last, and in stages over the course of a couple of days.

Above you can see the sun lighting up the glittery spirals and just glinting off the salt at the center of the piece. Below, I tilted the piece away from the light so you can see the difference in color. It’s interactive!

Finally we have it loosely tucked into a 5″x5″ frame, though it doesn’t really fit as it’s just a wee bit too wide. It’ll need to be matted into a bigger frame for final display, which I can do for you if you like for an additional fee.
