Say My Name, a Hastur parody comic by Amy Crook
The King in Yellow showed up recently in pop culture True Detective, though we never did get a properly otherwordly connection to Hastur and his pallid mask. Names have power, and saying someone’s name three times has long been a traditional way to summon that which you perhaps didn’t really want in your living room. But Hasur is there for you this holiday, whether you like it or not.

Cthulhu Waits

Cthulhu Waits, pen and ink art by Amy Crook
Three colors of pen, three different inking techniques, and one creepy drawing. Cthulhu glares balefully out of his cave, surrounded by strange growths and bathed in darkness. He waits for the stars to be right, for the summoning that will bring him from his sleep of death and up into the world once again.

Above, you can see all three inking techniques up close, the roe-like stalactites hanging down above the fine-inked blackness, with Cthulhu in his scribbly, tentacled glory. Below, you can see the piece in a frame, just waiting to drive you mad with its strange details.

A Series of Uncanny Fears: Coulrophobia

It’s been a while since I drew one of my Series of Uncanny Fears, and clowns seemed like a natural choice to bring them back. This happy guy just wants to bring joy and laughter to the world. Joy, laughter, and murder.
Definitely murder.
If you’re not too scared, you’ll have a chance to take him home in July’s Floating Gallery, which opens next Tuesday!

Frost Ghosts

This painting, too, is hard to convey online. There’s no shiny paint or other special effects, but the way the paint seems to have depth is somewhat lost, and the subtle shadings and chilly colors get warmed and muddied.
I let the paint on this one mostly do its own thing with only a little direction from me to tease out the handprints on the right and the strange, creepy face in the upper left. The frostlike bloom of lighter paint happens when the dark purple and pale, opaque periwinkle interact in a pool of color, and are allowed to dry as they will.
The ghosts put their mark on this painting just for you.

Above, you can see one of the handprints that bloomed above the surface of the dark paper and darker paint like frost traced on a window at night by a ghostly hand. Below, the painting sits in a frame in the incongruous sunshine, showing off more of its depths.

Wood Elf

This painting used to be a different painting, but I honestly never really liked that other painting, whereas this one has a great, fierce simplicity to it that I really enjoy. I found the face in the hair rather than the other way around, tight-lipped and androgynous and full of determination. I don’t really know if it’s a wood elf or some other creature of myth or fiction, but I love the auburn hair and muted green of the one eye you can see.

Above, you can see the one fierce eye glaring green out of the red-brown hair, eyebrow an expressive slash of darker brown. Below, I’ve put the piece in a temporary frame while it waits patiently for you to take it home and discover its mysteries for yourself.

Blood Moon 5

Blood Moon 5 by Amy Crook
Another Blood Moon made its way into my work queue this month, this time by adding some very subtle tentacles to an older painting in lieu of the previous image. This one is much more eerie than the last one, the bloody color leeching from the shadow to the white parts of the moon, and a second, smaller moon waiting off to one side, ruddy and strange. This sky is not our sky, or perhaps it is our sky many millennia hence, when the stars have become right and Great Cthulhu will rise up from R’lyeh to reclaim the planet for himself.

Above, you can more clearly see the subtle mist and dark black tentacles rising up from the bottom of the painting, reaching toward the bloody moons. Below, the piece rests in a frame, a little window to some awful future*, or perhaps somewhere very far away indeed.

*Perhaps it’s Thundarr the Barbarian’s future, instead of Cthulhu’s. I always did like Ookla.

Fetch the Cultist

Fetch the Cultist,
Lovecraft parody art by Amy Crook
The Hound of Tindalos is one of the most evil, annoying monsters to draw while playing Arkham Horror, and so of course I wanted to draw one being adorable. He’s playing fetch the cultist with Cthulhu! I’m sure the one he’s brought is only slightly chewed.
There’s not actually any real description of the hound in the books, it’s only called that because once it gets a time traveler’s scent, it will follow him through space and time like a hunting hound.
My idea is cuter.
