Commission: Winter Octopus
Friday, January 21st, 2011
Aside from my own, I did get to do one other winter card this year as a commission. Gretchen (proud owner of Nugget) saw my Squittens card design and asked me to draw her up a cheerful cephalopod all her own. We decided on cool wintry colors, and having him making snowflakes as a proper activity for a cute little octopus celebrating the season. The hat was a last-minute addition that gave him a bit of extra interest, and really pulled together the whole theme of the piece.
She’s gotten her cards sent and received by now, so I thought I’d give a last bit of holiday cheer by sharing the art with you.

Weeble Wednesday: Zombie Hearts Brains
Wednesday, January 19th, 2011
This charming fellow is another of the creepy cuties in my Monster Heart Coloring Book. His “heart” is a brain, which is a zombie’s real favorite thing, showing the real depth of his love that he’s willing to share. Of course, he’s got his heart in his hand as a spare, just in case brains aren’t your style.
Zombie 6 and Zombie’s Heart, both 5″x7″ pen and ink and Copic markers on watercolor paper. $129 for the pair in a double frame, with free shipping.

Weeble Wednesday: Dracula
Wednesday, January 12th, 2011
Today I’ve got a weeble close to my own heart, the classic Bela Lugosi’s Dracula — and his heart, of course. I even tried to copy Bela’s classic hand gestures with the stubby weeble fingers, to what I think are pretty amusing results. He’s got a swishy cape and a charming grin to show you how much he adores you.
You can color him yourself my new Monster Heart Coloring Book, get him on a handmade greeting card at Etsy, or buy the originals, below. Take home an adorably classic movie monster today!

Squid Hearts You

Squid Hearts You by Amy Crook
It seems hard to believe, but Valentine’s Day is little more than a month away already. As a sort of sequel to my wintery Squittens, I made a cheerful squid valentine to show his (or maybe her) love in this year’s cards.
I had to redraw the heart a couple of times before I liked the look of it, but I’m pleased with the tangled-up joy evident in his little squiddy features.

You can get him on a card here at Etsy.

Monster Heart Coloring Book
Thursday, January 6th, 2011
The perfect gift for the horror-loving Valentine in your life — a Monster Heart Coloring Book. Each monster is presented with his heart on the opposite page, from Frankenstein’s Monster’s stitched-together heart to the Mummy’s bandage-wrapped one. And as a bonus, a few of the monsters have brides! Dracula, modeled after the very classic performance by Bela Lugosi, even has a trio of his brides.
My Cthulhu Coloring Books got great reviews last year, so I decided to put out something special for Valentine’s day. This one’s a little longer, with 4 extra illustrations, and there’s all-new art including a Zombie and a brand-new Cthulhu.
Check out the Monster Heart Coloring Book at my Etsy shop – it’s sure to make you smile.

Holiday Cards of Potatoes Past
Thursday, December 16th, 2010
In years past, when I had more time on my hands, I used to hand-make all my holiday cards individually — with potato stamps. I used watercolors to brush colour onto the carved potato pieces, and then stamp them out. This particular set took 3 separate stamps, the figure, the gift, and the halo, each of which had to be done as a separate step. I think I made about 100 of these, and that was the year I decided never to do it this way again.
Hope you’re having a great holiday season!

Weeble Wednesday: Hound of Tindalos

Weeble Hound of Tindalos by Amy Crook
I’ve colored my second-to-last monster from the Cthulhu Coloring Book (though there’s also one bonus zombie left)! This is the Hound of Tindalos, a Lovecraft creation who is said to stalk time travelers like a hound once it gets their scent. He can appear anywhere there is an angle of less than 120 degrees, and here he’s slipping out of a corner to play fetch with you! Clearly you would never do something so naughty as to time travel, so you have nothing to fear from this gruesomely cute beast.
If you play Arkham Horror, you already know about this guy — he’s always one of the monsters that gets an unhappy groan when he appears out of the monster cup in our group.
