Country Mouse, City Mouse by Amy Crook

Country Mouse, City Mouse by Amy Crook

This is another tiny bedside-notebook doodle, this one inspired in part by the Aesop’s Fable, and in part by one of my not-so-secret addictions, the Facebook game MouseHunt. I imagine the country mouse is from somewhere far away from Gnawnia and its strange mice and determined hunters with their bizarre traps, while the city mouse would fit right in with the other denizens of the kingdom.

If Wishes Were Fishes

If Wishes Were Fishes by Amy Crook

If Wishes Were Fishes by Amy Crook

This doodle springs from a conflation of two sayings my Mom used to use, “If wishes were fishes, we’d live in the sea,” and “If wishes were horses, then beggars would ride.” Somehow my brain mixed the two up, and we have this doodle — “If wishes were fishes, then beggars would ride.” I went Seussian with the fish, giving the whole thing a cheerful, if surrealistic, feel.

Cartoon! Wendy & Me

Wendy and Me by Amy Crook

Wendy and Me by Amy Crook

Today’s art is another cartoon, this time of me and Wendy Cholbi, tech mermaid. Wendy wanted to expand her WordPress Installation offerings to include a package with some design included, and so I drew up this image to go with our bios on the sales page. It was fun not only to make Wendy into a mermaid, but to give my hair a bit of extra color (in real life that color would be so hard to maintain!) as well as the bunny ears, and a couple of t-shirts from ThinkGeek that neither of us actually owns — yet.

We’re also doing a free Website Color Clinic call on Wednesday to help people pick their own web palettes. Come join us and listen to me babble nervously about color!

Fabeku Fatunmise – Cartoon!

Fabeku Fatunmise by Amy Crook

Fabeku Fatunmise by Amy Crook

Fabeku Fatunmise is one of my favorite people on Twitter, he’s just full of good cheer and awesomeness. I’ve downloaded his non-sucky free stuff and really enjoyed it, so when he told me he wanted to be a cartoon, I was all over it! I even traded him part of his fee for another of his downloads, which I love as much as the first one.

Fabeku wanted a weeble, and he asked for his prop to be one of his drums, which he sent me a photo of for reference. A link to the Ramones t-shirt and the shoes, and we were in business. I sketched him up, and after a few changes I inked and we talked about colors (for the record, he’s “pinky medium white guy” colored), and then, result!

I have absolutely no idea how the ninja got in there, though.

Dancing Wood Sprites

Dancing Wood Sprites by Amy Crook

Dancing Wood Sprites by Amy Crook

Echoing back to my very first daily art post, I sketched up some little dancing wood sprites in my next-to-the-bed notebook. I’m going to end up putting some of these guys in a painting or two soon, so I wanted to get a little more practice in with their long, slender limbs and angular features. I imagine these two are just a part of a big circle of dancing fae celebrating the turning of the seasons or some such.

Reading Under a Tree 2

Reading Under a Tree 2 by Amy Crook

Reading Under a Tree 2 by Amy Crook

Technically I think this should be 1, as this sketch is a bit older than the one I posted last week. The willow tree shows a definite influence from Dr. Seuss — or perhaps Lawrence Yang — and the figure is taking shelter in the lee of the tree. Apparently, I also forgot to draw in clothes, since I put most of my attention into the tree, oops.

The colored background is actually from the sketchbook I was using, which has thick, creamy paper. It’s always interesting how different materials can affect the way the work comes out — I swear almost everything I’ve done in that particular sketchbook has an air of whimsy about it.

Loligoth Bride

Goth Bride by Amy Crook

Goth Bride by Amy Crook

The delightful Ang of Lowbrow Events commissioned this girl through my Be a Cartoon service over at Not Dead Yet Studios. She does alternative weddings, so she gave me free reign to doodle up any bride I wanted, as long as she was a little off the rails.

From her stripey stockings to her tiny top hat, this bride has a definite Gothic Lolita theme. I added a few spiders for extra morbidity, and then spun their web in the lining of her layered skirt. I considered doing the roses the same blood red as her hair and heart-shaped lipstick, but I decided to go with an eerie purple to match her pale violet eyes instead.

I’m happy to say Ang was thrilled, and you can find my bride lurking on the contact page of her site.

Loligoth Bride, 5″x7″ pen and ink and copic marker on watercolor paper, commission.
