Bear and Alphie
Thursday, August 17th, 2017
Bear is a big, old dog and the third puppy to get his portrait done for Courtney! And to finish up the quartet we have her own cat, Alphie. We decided to draw him as a happy murder baby, despite being asleep in nearly all the photos she sent me. You can practically see his butt wiggle!
Doing caricatures of pets is an interesting exercise! I exaggerated Alphie’s ears and Bear’s big head, and made the body rounder for the kitty, but smaller for the big puppy.
Tails both have the requisite amount of floof, however.
My commissions queue is jam-packed right now, but if you’re interested in reserving a spot drop me a line!

Exploring
Saturday, August 5th, 2017
Through the fantastic foliage, the tiger stalks its prey. Or that’s what this adventurous tabby cat is imagining. Colored-ink lines give a cartoonish appearance that’s meant to evoke a Disneyish feel (though Disney is usually a bit more coy about cat butt).
If you’ve ever met a cat, you know this is a very common view, however, and soon enough it becomes commonplace. The real question isn’t about the end of the cat facing us, but where the other end is headed off to and what it will find it its explorations.

Above, you can see the lovely details of ink lines and watercolor shading on the foreground foliage. Below, the kitty is in a frame, to be viewed as though through a cat door as it heads out on its adventure.

Pattern Cat
Saturday, June 3rd, 2017
This basking cat is covered in a pattern of repeating arcs which create a larger sense of pattern when viewed from a distance. It’s got its face up into the golden sunlight, with shimmering amethyst darkness all around.
There’s a little hint that perhaps the cat is scenting something good — your dinner, probably — but for now it’s just enjoying the moment.
Cats are, after all, solar powered.

Above, you can see a very close detail of the cat’s patterned ears perked up in the sunbeam. Below, this unique kitty is lounging in its frame, just waiting for its forever home.

Podovich
Saturday, May 6th, 2017
It’s Caturday – a wild Pod appears! Only this time he’s been evolved into a Russian Blue instead of his usual sleek black, hence the name.
Podovich is curled up in a fuzzy ball with just one pink ear to break up the soft, inviting grays. The white pillowy surface he’s sleeping on carries just a hint of shadow, as of course he’s found himself someplace flooded with light for his nap.
That must be why he’s got his paw over his eyes.
Where in your life do you need a kitty to remind you of the value of catnaps?

Podovich, detail, by Amy Crook
Above, you can see the little details of fur and ear and one closed eye not quite hidden completely. Below, Podovich is napping in a frame, safe and content.

Tuesday, April 11th, 2017
The amazing Sadynax gave herself a 30-day Marker Challenge last month, and I decided to do it for April to help get back in the swing of art after my surgery. Each day had its own weird quirks, and I think I already know which one I’m gonna redo for day 30, haha.
I’m giving my wonderful Patreon supporters some bonuses at the $5+ sketch levels this month, so it’s a good time to become a patron!

Day 2: Choose 3 colors blindly.

Day 3: Use only gray tones (Copics C, N, W)

Day 4: Use complementary colors

Day 5: Use only the markers’ wide tip end.

Day 6: Use only one color family.

Day 6: Use only markers that end with 3.

Day 8: Choose 2 colors blindly.

Day 9: Use only 00, 000, & 0000 markers.

Day 10: Color skin without using any E, R, or YR markers.

I Am Not Here to Please You

I Am Not Here to Please You, 12″x9″ pen & ink, Copic marker, and watercolor on Strathmore bristol for The Doubleclicks video “Women Know Math”
The Doubleclicks got 50 women and non-binary artists to illustrate their amazing video for Women Know Math, and I got to be part of it! I am absolutely in love with this song, the video, and everything it has to say.
Although they licensed the art for this specific use, the original is up for grabs in all its cat-filled glory. A rare self-portrait by the artist, with special guest appearances by Podsworth and Belladonna, this drawing bursts out of its boundaries with glorious movement and joy.

I Am Not Here to Please You, detail, by Amy Crook
Above, there is possibly the most accurate drawing I’ve ever made of Belladonna, and some pj pants I only wish I owned. Below, you can see this drawing framed, including the very faint pencil reminder up in the top portion with the text I was meant to using.
