WIP: Molten Sun
Monday, July 5th, 2010
After finishing Molten Sky, I hung it up in my apartment to dry, and slowly got an idea for ways to make the single idea into a series. This is the second one, also 24″ square. For a long time it looked like it had a bite out of it and made me crave Oreos, but now I’ve finally got the metallic copper, bronze and gold filled in the “bite.” I’m not quite sure how I’m going to finish it off, but for now it’s drying in the same spot the other one occupied, where I can look up and see it and contemplate.

Weeble Wednesday: Monster Wearing Nurf Shoes
Wednesday, June 30th, 2010
Months ago, I attended a teleclass of Havi Brooks’ that also had a chat room to go with it. In the chat room we got off on a tangent of a tangent and were talking about Monsters (aka those critical internal voices) who threw shoes (aka said nasty, unhelpful things), and how nice it would be if those shoes just bounced off harmlessly as though they were made of (ahem) “Nurf.” And I said that I wanted to draw such a phenomenon, and promptly forgot about it for many months, oops!
So, for the first of many Weeble Wednesdays, I bring you a Monster wearing Nurf Shoes! He might toss one at you, but it won’t really hurt, and you can always toss it back.
Monster Wearing Nurf Shoes, 5″x7″ pen & ink with Copic markers on watercolor paper.

Country Mouse, City Mouse

Country Mouse, City Mouse by Amy Crook
This is another tiny bedside-notebook doodle, this one inspired in part by the Aesop’s Fable, and in part by one of my not-so-secret addictions, the Facebook game MouseHunt. I imagine the country mouse is from somewhere far away from Gnawnia and its strange mice and determined hunters with their bizarre traps, while the city mouse would fit right in with the other denizens of the kingdom.

Being Your Slave
Thursday, June 17th, 2010
A recent late-night discussion on Twitter about the movie The Pillow Book with Ewan McGregor reminded me of this piece, so I thought I’d post it for today’s art. Shakespeare’s Sonnet 57 adorns the chest of our nameless man, the swirls and strokes of hand-painted calligraphy decorating the planes and valleys of his torso.
I first painted the figure itself, and then once it was dry the painstaking brush calligraphy was applied by hand on top. I suspect the process, while far easier on the flat surface, is a lot less fun when the person in question is merely a painting.
This piece is painted on canvas board, which is primed canvas wrapped around a cardboard base rather than stretched on wooden bars. Because of the nature of the piece, it wants to lean insouciantly against a stack of books or be tucked into a nook in a bookshelf rather than framed and hung — any frame or matte it was put in would obscure part of the calligraphy.
I’m not sure if Shakespeare would approve of the use to which I’ve put his words, but given his penchant for low humour and bawdy lines, I like to think he’d be amused.

Cartoon! Wendy & Me
Monday, June 14th, 2010
Today’s art is another cartoon, this time of me and Wendy Cholbi, tech mermaid. Wendy wanted to expand her WordPress Installation offerings to include a package with some design included, and so I drew up this image to go with our bios on the sales page. It was fun not only to make Wendy into a mermaid, but to give my hair a bit of extra color (in real life that color would be so hard to maintain!) as well as the bunny ears, and a couple of t-shirts from ThinkGeek that neither of us actually owns — yet.
We’re also doing a free Website Color Clinic call on Wednesday to help people pick their own web palettes. Come join us and listen to me babble nervously about color!

Fabeku Fatunmise – Cartoon!
Tuesday, June 8th, 2010
Fabeku Fatunmise is one of my favorite people on Twitter, he’s just full of good cheer and awesomeness. I’ve downloaded his non-sucky free stuff and really enjoyed it, so when he told me he wanted to be a cartoon, I was all over it! I even traded him part of his fee for another of his downloads, which I love as much as the first one.
Fabeku wanted a weeble, and he asked for his prop to be one of his drums, which he sent me a photo of for reference. A link to the Ramones t-shirt and the shoes, and we were in business. I sketched him up, and after a few changes I inked and we talked about colors (for the record, he’s “pinky medium white guy” colored), and then, result!
I have absolutely no idea how the ninja got in there, though.

Commission: Snape & Harry
Saturday, June 5th, 2010
My good friend Delta commissioned this in lieu of a cartoon during my art sale last month. She asked for a quiet moment of reconciliation between her two favorite wizards, a bit of fan art to add to her collection. I had fun with it; though Harry’s coy over-the-shoulder glance came out a bit awkward, I like to think it adds to the overall feel of the piece. After all, nothing ever goes quite smoothly between these two in the books, either.
