Snape by Amy Crook

Snape by Amy Crook

To go with yesterday’s botched Potions lesson, here’s a very stylized drawing of Professor Snape to go with it. The lightning bolt is from a very silly little Harry Potter stamp kit, and the rest is pen and ink.

Potions Accident by Amy Crook

Potions Accident by Amy Crook

By now I’m sure it’s obvious I’m a big fan of the Harry Potter books, so I thought I’d post another little drawing I did. The cheap paper made the Copic markers bleed a little more than usual, but I like the effect in the eerie magic flame under Harry’s cauldron.

Brown, detail, by Amy Crook

Brown, detail, by Amy Crook

This is another monoprint, a one-of-a-kind print created by painting directly onto a blank plate with thick water-based paints and then running through a printing press like an etching. You can see the places where the brush strokes stood up to the process in the black shadows, but the outer edges turned to a softer, more uniform texture as they went through the press.

See a face in the shapes? You’re supposed to. It’s my secret who it was based off, though.

Brown, 3″x3″ monoprint on 7″x10″ watercolor paper, $299 with free shipping.

This print is not currently framed, and would need to be matted or framed to be displayed.

Weeble Cthulhu

Weeble Cthulhu by Amy Crook

Weeble Cthulhu by Amy Crook

As promised, I’m reposting Weeble Cthulhu from earlier this year so he’s hiding in amongst my daily art for those seeking out my (so far rather small) series of Lovecraftian weebles. He’s got his pet Shoggoth with him with his bowl of cultist snacks and everything.

I made a greeting card out of him for Valentine’s Day that said, “Cthulhu wanted to give you a heart, but they were all too small and squishy.” They sold so well I took off the “Happy Valentine’s Day” and have left them up on the shop ever since.

Weeble Cthulhu, 4″x6″ pen and ink and Copic markers on a watercolor postcard.

Weeble Wednesday: The Innsmouth Look

The Innsmouth Look by Amy Crook

The Innsmouth Look by Amy Crook

It’s beginning to look a lot like Fishmen! I’ve decided to do a whole series of Weeble Mythos creatures, to go with Weeble Cthulhu with his Shoggoth — who apparently I posted as a wallpaper but never gave their own post, oops. Sunday, maybe!

Lovecraft’s classic story Shadows Over Innsmouth has inspired a lot of art, writing and video since, and this is my interpretation of the creepy Deep One who’s nearly through with his transformation. I’ve been thinking of putting him on a card or print (he’s currently trapped in a sketchbook so his original isn’t for sale), what do you think?

I’m thinking perhaps Father Dagon & Mother Hydra next, or perhaps Hastur.

Sugarbutt the Fairy by Amy Crook

Sugarbutt the Fairy by Amy Crook

One of my shameful addictions is the Facebook game Fairyland. When I first started playing I named my Fairy “Sugarbutt” and after a few months I decided to draw up a portrait of him, complete with rosy cheeks and flower cap. I guess he lost his leafy clothing right before the portrait, oops?

Absinthe Snape

Absinthe Snape by Amy Crook

Absinthe Snape by Amy Crook

A while back I did some silly doodles as gifts for online friends, and this one ended quite polished. I think it was the absinthe glass, which just wanted a level of fine detail to go with its fine contents, plus the style was just fun to draw. There’s just something about drawing Snape that’s engaging for me, with his unrelenting black clothes and scowling face and big nose.

I’ve never actually tried absinthe myself — I have a friend that’s a big fan of it since it got re-legalized (something about lead pipes driving people crazy rather than wormwood), but he never manages to pony up and give me some to try. Perhaps this year I’ll make it to his absinthe bar at Dickens Faire in SF.
