Green Angel

Green Angel by Amy Crook

Green Angel, 10″x8″ oil painting on canvas, 11.5″x9.5″ framed

This is yet another painting done off a model, from a photo this time of him lounging in bed. I wanted to imagine an angel with butterfly wings, not a tiny fairy but a full man-sized creature, fallen to earth to partake of the pleasures only to be found here. His wings are tattered from his fall but, I hope, still functional, still able to carry him up above if not all the way back from whence he came.

This small oil painting is on stretched canvas and framed in an antiqued silver wooden frame. I have it hanging by the light in my bedroom where I see it as I enter and exit, flicking the switch off and on.

Meet Wendy’s Monster, Ruby

Wendy's Monster, Ruby, by Amy Crook

Wendy's Monster, Ruby, by Amy Crook

As an offshoot of my Be a Cartoon service, I offered 3 spots to people who wanted me to draw their Monsters — those internal naysayers who do their best to keep us safe through discouragement, disparaging and criticism.

When Wendy Cholbi (tech mermaid!) emailed me about her Monster, she wanted to see one that she’d already met, Ruby, her Inner Bodyguard. Wendy explains:

I first got to know her (well, I’ve known her all my life, but in that shadowy background kind of way) at last summer’s Writer’s Retreat with Jen Louden — Jen had us do an exercise where we interviewed our Inner Critic, and who should pop up but this totally badass lizard-mama, basically telling me to back the fuck off. Once she realized I was honestly curious, she let me in how important her job (personal security for me, of course) is. It’s been really awesome getting to know her, and when Havi’s Monster Coloring Book came out, I knew Ruby deserved her very own page.

Ruby’s a big Butch Biker Bitch whose bruise-purple skin represents Wendy’s tender inner self, which Ruby tries to protect by keeping everything away. She’s like the over-enthusiastic bodyguard that puts the pizza boy in a headlock when he tries to hand you a pen for the credit card receipt — she means well, but she’s left poor Wendy kind of lonely in this exclusive club of which she’s guarding the door, because no one is allowed in. So she has a bit of the ballbuster-with-a-heart-of-molten-gold (only she’d NEVER admit to having a heart of ANY kind. Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken?).

I have one Monster left out of the set, I should probably go prod a certain someone to approve her inks so I can get coloring. If you want to be a cartoon yourself, it’s only $79 — I have 3 people in my queue right now, but I’m always happy to make room for more!

Weeble Wednesday: Monster Wearing Nurf Shoes

Monster Wearing Nurf Shoes by Amy Crook

Monster Wearing Nurf Shoes by Amy Crook

Months ago, I attended a teleclass of Havi Brooks’ that also had a chat room to go with it. In the chat room we got off on a tangent of a tangent and were talking about Monsters (aka those critical internal voices) who threw shoes (aka said nasty, unhelpful things), and how nice it would be if those shoes just bounced off harmlessly as though they were made of (ahem) “Nurf.” And I said that I wanted to draw such a phenomenon, and promptly forgot about it for many months, oops!

So, for the first of many Weeble Wednesdays, I bring you a Monster wearing Nurf Shoes! He might toss one at you, but it won’t really hurt, and you can always toss it back.

Monster Wearing Nurf Shoes, 5″x7″ pen & ink with Copic markers on watercolor paper.

Wood Sprite Flashing

Wood Sprite Flashing by Amy Crook

Wood Sprite Flashing by Amy Crook

I’ll round out my weekend of naked sketches with this impish little sprite, sitting on a branch and flashing the world. I guess he just didn’t feel like putting leaves anywhere but his hair today.

Mom’s wedding went really smoothly and was lovely, and I survived mostly unscathed, except for a blister on one heel from the new shoes. It was very small and had just immediate family, and nobody dropped anything, not even their lines.

Icon by Amy Crook

Icon, 1″x1″ etching on a 10″x4″ piece of watercolor paper

This is another tiny etching plate, which I inked using a method where the figure, who was etched deep enough to leave an impression in the paper, was inked in yellow, then the plate was wiped mostly clean and the rest of the surface was re-inked in red.

In classical art, yellow is the color of suffering, and of course in modern times we’re all about red for pain and blood. The diluted ink actually bled down the paper a little when it was run through the press, adding to the symbolism.

I actually did a whole series of crucifixion pieces during that time period, though this is definitely the smallest of the lot — the plate itself is only one inch square.

Ophiuchus

Ophiuchus by Amy Crook

Ophiuchus by Amy Crook

The second Starcycles Calendar I ever laid out was in 2001, and when Georgia asked for Ophiuchus on the cover, I decided to dive in with an oil painting. The image wrapped around the book, so the snake’s tail and field of stars were the back cover, while the figure was the main focus on the front.

Ophiuchus, 9″x12″ oil on canvas, sold.

Cartoon! Wendy & Me

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Wendy and Me by Amy Crook

Wendy and Me by Amy Crook

Today’s art is another cartoon, this time of me and Wendy Cholbi, tech mermaid. Wendy wanted to expand her WordPress Installation offerings to include a package with some design included, and so I drew up this image to go with our bios on the sales page. It was fun not only to make Wendy into a mermaid, but to give my hair a bit of extra color (in real life that color would be so hard to maintain!) as well as the bunny ears, and a couple of t-shirts from ThinkGeek that neither of us actually owns — yet.

We’re also doing a free Website Color Clinic call on Wednesday to help people pick their own web palettes. Come join us and listen to me babble nervously about color!
