Minion MWAH! fan art comic by Amy Crook

Minion MWAH! fan art comic by Amy Crook

Inspired by this ridiculous gif, I felt the need to do some Minions all on their own. I swear I was going to start holiday cards, but I couldn’t resist! I suppose you could put some mistletoe above him and call it a Christmas card, heh.

I thought he was too plain all by himself, so after I penciled in the giant MWAH! I decided to add some extra Minion shenanigans across the top. My favorite is the one sticking is tongue out, of course.

You can get one to send to all your friends here at my Etsy shop.

The Power of Poddles

the least-blurry photo I could get of a very wriggly Podsworth

the least-blurry photo I could get of a very wriggly Podsworth

I have found a most excellent way to help stave off the afternoon sleepies! This won’t work for everyone, because not everyone has a cat who deserves this sort of treatment*, but it works for me.

First, I find Pod** where he is sleeping on top of the cat tree. Then I acquire him, protesting, and carry him to the bedroom, where we lay down in bed and have cuddles of dubious consent. He purrs and rubs his head into the petting and then leaves as soon as possible, but it’s a very nice restful, quiet minute or two.

The funny thing is that now, after doing this for a while, he still makes his break for freedom, but after a moment of staring out the window to make sure the squirrels and/or crows aren’t in attendance, he comes back. Having proven that he is above the cuddles, he demands… more cuddles.

Poddleston, Poddleston, Poddleston Pie
A fly can’t bird but a bird can fly
Ask me a riddle and I reply
Poddleston, Poddleston, Poddleston Pie***

It’s a really nice way to get a bit of rejuvenation in a short period of time, and also harass my cat. Who deserves it.****

*I don’t do this with Belladonna, because she is not a fucker who deserves naptime interruptions, and also doesn’t enjoy it as much.
**His actual name is Pteropodidae, in case you were curious.
***Horribly misquoted from Winnie the Pooh
****No, seriously, he’s a total fucker when he’s awake.

PPS – Yes, this is what it’s like in my brain, aren’t you glad you get to see more of it?

Edges

Edges, abstract art by Amy Crook

Edges, abstract art by Amy Crook

Something bright and cheerful for your Monday, whether you’re working or have a day off like many Americans. I’m putting a selection of the new pieces on the blog this week, but there’s even more art at the Floating Gallery and it’s only available until next Sunday!

I had a piece of 10″x8″ watercolor paper that I made a background on in bright yellow, green and darker green, using a spray bottle to make the fascinating layered shapes with their fractal borders like fjords. I used pen & ink on this piece a bit haphazardly at first, and what I ended up with was a work of art that just wasn’t working with itself. So, I girded my loins and got out my tear bar and tore it in half, then took a bit off each piece to end up with two 5″x7″ works of art, and a couple of bookmarks. All of the pieces then got some more work, and Edges is one of the results, the right half of the original.

Above, you can see the little critter I doodled in one corner where the edges seemed to suggest him. He’s smaller than a dime, and says pbth on your size issues. Below, speaking of size issues, you can see the piece in a frame with my iPhone, so you can appreciate the size it ended up.

Mycroft’s Minions

Mycroft's Minions, parody art by Amy Crook

Mycroft’s Minions, parody art by Amy Crook

It’s more Minions! Am I the only one who sees these wee pill-shaped dudes and thinks of that old Naprosyn slogan, “Little. Yellow. Different.”?

After pondering the idea of crossing Despicable Me over with some of my favorite fandoms, I couldn’t resist the idea of Mycroft having actual Minions with his own little M logo on their overalls and everything. And then, when trying to figure out a scenario that would be fun to draw, I couldn’t help but imagine Mycroft in my favorite scene from the first movie, down on one knee smooching the Minions goodnight one by one.

This is another one of those ideas that had to be a card, but isn’t really for any occasion specifically, just to put a smile on someone’s face. Unless you know someone who’s actually got Minions, in which case it’s kind of a sympathy card.

Banana?

The TARDIS has Minions

The TARDIS has Minions, Doctor Who parody art by Amy Crook

“I hate it when the TARDIS gets minions.”
Doctor Who parody art by Amy Crook

I’ve been all about Despicable Me the past few weeks, as anyone who knows me in real life can attest, so I’m letting the Minions invade my art as well! I just really wanted to draw David Tennant’s crazy hair and particular posture as he surveyed the Minions infecting his poor TARDIS, so I gave the tenth Doctor a handful of Minions to deal with.

I’ve got a couple more of these planned, too, and some of the originals might be available in my first monthly shop opening. And I really need to think of a better name for that little 8-day window of new art. Mini-Shows? Pop-Up Gallery? It’s a work in progress.

I’m keeping up with my plan to post one new card to my Etsy shop a week, and while I’m not sure what occasion this is for, I can guarantee it’ll put a smile on the face of the right recipient.

Old Friends Who’ve Just Met

Old Friends Who've Just Met, Muppets fan art by Amy Crook

Old Friends Who’ve Just Met, Muppets fan art by Amy Crook

I was watching The Muppet Movie the other day, and if there was every a Muppet to get himself in a friendly situation with a tentacle monster, it’s Gonzo. The title comes from Gonzo’s big song, where he sings, “There’s not a word yet, for old friends who’ve just met.” Given his penchant for putting starfish in his pants in Muppet Treasure Island, I think Gonzo and the tentacle monster are going to get along just fine.

Above, you can see Gonzo up close, along with the spot where my inks smeared, ironically while I was specifically trying not to smear them with my hand and so I put a pencil board over them. I’m just having a bad week with inks, man. Below, you can see it in a frame, just waiting to go back there someday. I feel I should point out that I had my choice of tentacle monsters and Muppet action figures, Pez dispensers and plushies to choose from for this photo. Gonzo in his cannon won because he was closest.

Dingbats 1

Free color dingbats by Amy Crook

Free color dingbats by Amy Crook

When I got the idea to make you guys some free little clip art type dingbats to use as you will, I really didn’t plan out what I wanted to make. So, this is why you have a dozen weird little drawings, from gothy to silly, which you may feel free to use however you like. I’d love a link back, but just this once it’s not required.

I think they’d make fun “drop caps” at the start of a post, or little bits of art to emphasize quotes or other little bits of blogging you want people to notice.

I haven’t cut these up into individual pieces, but you should be able to do that easily enough with any simple online image editing software. I’ve even included the black and white versions below, I particularly like the gothy ones in b&w. Though the skull is better in color, clearly.

If you want a high-res one to do something fun with, email me and I’ll send it over. Just tell me what you want it for, and it’s yours!
