Elder Thing sketch by Amy Crook

Elder Thing sketch by Amy Crook

Another little coloring book sketch! This one is a proper Lovecraftian beastie, the Elder Thing, which is symmetrical along five sides instead of bilaterally. I didn’t really look up all the details, so I’m pretty sure I got some of the bits not quite right, but I don’t really mind. He looks beastly enough like this.

Cuppa Shoggoth?

Cuppa Shoggoth? sketch by Amy Crook

Cuppa Shoggoth? sketch by Amy Crook

I’m still not feeling well, so I’ll just let this little coloring book doodle (that is, one of the sketches I usually draw in the inside front cover whenever someone buys a Cthulhu Coloring Book or Monster Heart Coloring Book) speak for itself.

Or something.

Snow Cthulhu watercolor by Amy Crook

SnowCthulhu by Amy Crook

It’s a snowman! It’s Cthulhu! It’s… SnowCthulhu!

Tiny, delicate pen work makes up the stick tentacles, arms and wings. This demanded careful, slightly messy watercolors to paint in the sticks and blue snowy shadows on him. His coal-black eyes have little hints of blue and purple in them just like real coal. Basically, he’s just awesome.

He may or may not become a holiday card this year, but he’ll definitely star in next year’s lineup. I was just feeling seasonal! And, you know, Lovecraftian. Because Christmas and unspeakable horrors just go together.

Sharpie Week: Shub-Niggurath

Shub-Niggurath Sharpie sketch by Amy Crook

Shub-Niggurath Sharpie sketch by Amy Crook

Sometimes called (or associated with, or… well, it is Lovecraft) the Black Goat of the Woods with a Thousand Young, Shub-Niggurath is one of Lovecraft’s more interesting creations. I admit I got a little bored after 3 young, but I’m sure the other 997 are around there somewhere. It’s a bit more loose than the rest of the Sharpie Week drawings, mainly because I didn’t feel like coloring it all in, but it’s sketch Saturday so I figure I can get away with it. This is just a preliminary weeble, anyway, though there aren’t really any descriptions to go on. I just looked up a black goat and tried to make it creepy, weeble-y, and cute. I mean, look at those floppy ears!

Mountains of Madness

Mountains of Madness, watercolor by Amy Crook

Mountains of Madness by Amy Crook

This piece started out as an experiment in painting mountains for a client, and turned into a bewitchingly creepy landscape once I put in the sky. I used salt to create the ghostly texture in the sky, which one person described as a crowd of people staring down. Spooky!

I named it after a classic HP Lovecraft story that I haven’t even read (I know! Bad artist! No biscuit!), but the name just seemed to fit with the looming sky and lunatic moon.

Mountains of Madness, 7″x5″ watercolor on paper, nfs (sold).

Here you can see it tucked into a frame, which can be included for an additional fee.

Cthulhu’s Gift

Cthulhu's Gift, cartoon art by Amy Crook

Cthulhu’s Gift by Amy Crook

I’ve been working on holiday cards again this week, and Cthulhu really wants you to like his gift. I decided to make a rather generic gift for the original, and then I drew a page of holiday dingbats — including a delightfully gruesome spike bow of a sort I’ve actually bought and put on gifts myself (minus the blood).

The original is, of course, the first version, since this one exists courtesy of Photoshop, but I find I’m rather fond of his baubles. I want a tentacle glass ornament!

This is what he looks like in a frame, though the original won’t be framed unless the buyer requests it for an additional fee.

Five 5

Five 5, artist trading card by Amy Crook

Five 5 by Amy Crook

This paper completely absorbed the water before any of the salt could even dissolve, making mysterious swirls of ink surrounding each spiral. I went back in and created the crosshatched figure, and once it was most of the way done, I turned it on the side and found that it looked rather like a creepy, Lovecraftian figure. I used water to blur the ink and add significant shape to the shoggoth, the pattern of dots turning the fifth spiral into a part of the figure like an eye on a stalk.

Five 5, 3.5″x2.5″ mixed media on paper, nfs (but available for trading!).

I find it interesting how all the ink on this piece, except for the signature, is blurred and softened,  giving the whole piece has a creepy, surreal feeling. Happy Halloween season!
