I’m concluding the week of monsters with a pair of sketches (#2 will go up tomorrow) inspired by the amazing pencil sculptures of Jennifer Maestre. This one was specifically inspired by the piece “Chimera,” not an exact match but a little doodled monster of similar lineage. I think it came out with a distinctly Lovecraftian feel, especially once the mouth became an eye and the eyelashes became tentacles. It’s another piece out of my tiny bedside sketchbook, so the original is only a few inches high.

This is another wee bedside doodle, this one dipping its toe into the horror genre. I swear to this day a part of me still believes in things that lurk under the bed — how else to explain the sound of something sliding against the metal frame when both cats are asleep, and in sight?

Loligoth Bride

Goth Bride by Amy Crook
The delightful Ang of Lowbrow Events commissioned this girl through my Be a Cartoon service over at Not Dead Yet Studios. She does alternative weddings, so she gave me free reign to doodle up any bride I wanted, as long as she was a little off the rails.
From her stripey stockings to her tiny top hat, this bride has a definite Gothic Lolita theme. I added a few spiders for extra morbidity, and then spun their web in the lining of her layered skirt. I considered doing the roses the same blood red as her hair and heart-shaped lipstick, but I decided to go with an eerie purple to match her pale violet eyes instead.
I’m happy to say Ang was thrilled, and you can find my bride lurking on the contact page of her site.

Pigeonholed

I painted this around the same time as some of my other abstract and semi-abstract pieces, and you can see some technical similarity with Precious and Untitled Experiment 1. The jewel-tone colors sneak through the black texture, and contrast with the frame around the sad, pigeonholed head. It’s hard to capture the subtle colors in a photograph, but the piece has a lot of depth in real life.
I actually sold this painting years ago to a friend who was moving at the time, and although it’s long paid for, he never did manage to pick it up and take it home, so I hold it in trust for him. Hey, Josh, come get your art!

If you’re at all into genre fiction & television, you might want to click this one to read the headstones. I was feeling pretty silly, so there’s a bunch of silly pop culture references lurking in amongst the uneasy dead. Note the dandelion, the black cat, and of course the zombie hand bursting up out of Mr. Addams’ grave.

My Heart Bleeds by Amy Crook
This rather morbid watercolor was one of my unValentines this year, a cross between a tradition and realistic heart. The blood red paint dried in thick pools and was allowed to drip naturally, nearly to the bottom of the card — in its frame, the chrome picks up the reflection as it disappears at the bottom edge. Blue veins call to mind a real heart as they trace across the surface.

Zombie Head Stitch Markers

Zombie Head Stitch Markers
Do you knit, or know and love a knitter who’s a little left of center? Or at least one who loves zombies.
This is a set of 5 handmade stitch markers fashioned from glow-in-the-dark polymer clay. I had a lot of fun giving each one their own personality, making sure there was a blond, brunet, redhead and even a bald little skull.
I packed them up in an old Altoids tin and filled it with coriander “earth” so your zombies will arrive safely buried and ready to eat… er, mark your stitches. They won’t really eat your brains. Probably.
