Affection
Monday, April 20th, 2015
Thorin’s being affectionate with his burglar in this little doodle, with some mysterious sparkly bubbles in the background because reasons. Texture reasons.
I had some extra square bits of paper, and rather than chop them up into bookmarks, I decided to sketch on them! This is the first of four, well, two that are done, and two that still need to be done.

Sunday Round-Up & Minion Sketch
Sunday, August 11th, 2013

a week full of cartoons and things. but mostly cartoons.
I had a tiring week of getting up early and doing ALL the things. How about you? Monday I posted a soaring bird of prey, and Tuesday Gonzo made a new friend. Wednesday the delightful Tara Swiger talked about her commissioned art. Thursday Lestrade showed up in the Giant Rats book to relieve Sherlock’s boredom, and Saturday John tormented Sherlock by demanding common courtesy in exchange for tea.
Today I have a little sketch I started while I was pretending to be a cat, and then finished after pretending to be a Muppet. This is my newest dorky fannish obsession — Gru’s Minions from Despicable Me 1&2! The minions are the best part of those movies.

Ba-na-na?

Sunday Round-Up & Shudde M’el Sketch
Sunday, August 4th, 2013

art, art everywhere!
Another busy week, whew! Monday I did a long-overdue sequel to Growth, and Tuesday I finished an actual painting on canvas. Wednesday I updated you on the State of the Artist. Thursday another Uncanny Fear came out to haunt us, and Friday I switched gears with some silly clip art dingbats. Saturday John was grateful, if a bit reluctantly.
For today’s sketch, we have someone’s weird coloring book addition, and one of the Lovecraft Mythos critters that kicked our butts one of the last times we played Arkham Horror, Shudde M’el.

He’s kind of like a sandworm that just sits on you until you die.

Sunday Round-Up & Doctor Donna Sketch
Sunday, July 28th, 2013

A full week chock full of fullness. Also, art.
What a week! I had a bit of flu the week before and early this week, so I wasn’t sure I’d manage to get you a whole week of art, but I squeaked by. Whew. Monday I indulged in a pencil drawing of another of my own characters. Tuesday there weren’t tentacles, but there was an abandoned city on some alien planet, so, close enough. Wednesday I found 3 watercolors that I love and reminded you that they’re waiting for new homes. Thursday there were more strange stars, and Friday Bilbo got an overabundance of flowers. Saturday we shared a lovely view from the TARDIS.
Today’s sketch is another TARDIS-y one, which was a thank-you gift for a lovely patron who bought some Doctor Who art. I might redo it into a proper bit of art one of these weeks, what do you think?

“Are you sure this is safe?”
“Just enjoy it!”
“That’s what they all say.”

Con the Earth Sprite

Con the Earth Sprite by Amy Crook
Con here is another character from my book! I’m not sure this quite captures the potato-like grumpiness of the character, but I had fun drawing his wrinkly little head and stumpy body.
I’ve chosen a winner to get the hard copy of the book using an old-fashioned D&D die, and Andria’s already written me back so she’ll get hers next week. The freebie days were quite successful, and the book itself continues to trickle out a few copies each day. I’ve already got an idea for a sequel, which I’ll probably start during NaNoWriMo this year, but given that this book was started back in 2010, don’t hold your breath! The new book will focus on Julian, who wanted to have a say of his own.
Con the Earth Sprite, 5″x7″ pencil on paper. If you read & liked the book, I’d love it if you’d review me on Amazon!

Sunday Round-Up & Plant sketch
Sunday, June 30th, 2013

a whole week full of the artses
A whole week with no skipped days, whee! Monday a stingray swam into the sunlight for us, and Tuesday we dove deeper to look at Cthulhu’s house-anemone. Wednesday I showed off a preview of some of my many works in progress. Thursday there was a visit from Captain Jack Harkness, and Friday another fairytale sky made its appearance. Saturday three obedient service dogs showed off their harnesses for a client.
And now it’s Sunday, and I have another houseplant for you! This one in a proper pot, though its leaves are mysteriously see-through, showing a grey shadow of the pot wherever they cross paths.

Crowned Skull
Monday, June 10th, 2013

Crowned Skull by Amy Crook
After drawing yesterday’s bookmark, I decided to draw a big version of the same image. I actually have a Halloween model skull on my bookshelf, wearing the paper crown out of a Christmas cracker, so he’s been the inspiration and model. His name is Sherrinford, because of reasons.
Personally, I think he would appeal to fans of Game of Thrones, given how everyone dies while George RR Martin drinks your tears.

Crowned Skull, detail, by Amy Crook
Above, you can see the way the black ink separates into greys, blues and browns when I use the water brush to create shading. Below, you can see him in a frame, looking regal and tragic with my iPhone for moral support. Well, and size reference.
