Windblown by Amy Crook

Windblown, 8″x4″ watercolor on Fluid watercolor paper

Brilliant oranges, pinks, and golds paint the sky as the red sun sinks below the horizon. A lone figure stands next to the tree, both of them tousled by the unseen winds. A raven heads for them both, graceful despite the headwind.

What’s the story here? You could hang this up in your home and contemplate the possible tales as you go about your day, each glimpse sparking a new line of thought.

Above, you can see a close-up of our big black bird, flying headlong into the wind. Below, the whole windblown tableau is waiting in a temporary frame to find its permanent home.

Tea: 11th Doctor

Tea: 11th Doctor, commission art by Amy Crook

Tea: 11th Doctor, 5″x7″ pen & ink and Copic marker on paper

One of my favourite patrons commissioned me to draw a series of 4 little comic portraits of her favourite characters with their favourite teas. Favourites all around!

This first piece in the Tea Series is the Eleventh Doctor, drinking delicately out of his decorated cup and saucer. I’d like to say the Time Lord knows better than to put milk or sugar in his oolong, but this is a man deeply fond of fish fingers and custard in combination, so who knows.

We’ll get to the other three next month, after the Floating Gallery has drifted away.

4 bookmarks by Amy Crook, pen & ink and Copic marker

4 bookmarks by Amy Crook, 1.5″x7″ pen & ink and Copic marker on comic backing board

My wonderful backers on Patreon this month gave me some great prompts, and so we have a dragon, a cat, some spring flowers, and Rory from Gilmore Girls. I was apparently feeling the purple, though to be fair I knew the dragon person liked purple, and I’ve always associated spring with lilacs.

If you’d like to see me sketch to your specs next month, become a patron yourself!

Wimble, a Sherlock parody comic by Amy Crook

Wimble: Any of several boring tools, such as a gimlet or an auger; to bore with.
7″x5″ pen & ink and Copic marker on paper

This was only the second Word Art Wednesday, and I’ve already resorted to terrible puns. I don’t think this bodes well for you all, but hopefully you’ll enjoy them anyway.

I’ll be doing another of these tomorrow on Periscope, probably around 2pm Pacific. Come join me! Or watch me. Or at least my hands. Something.

Plague Doctor Who

Plague Doctor Who, parody art by Amy Crook

Plague Doctor Who, 5″x7″ pen & ink and Copic marker on paper

One day, I sat at my art table and made a list of all the commissions I have pending, because I’d like to re-open the queue someday and that means finishing the art already owing. Then, I drew this instead, which nobody asked for. Because reasons.*

Of all the Doctors I’ve watched, Eleven seemed the likeliest to wear a plague mask, and also the easiest to tell apart from the others with subtle costume cues. And by subtle, I mean the fez.

Also, plague masks are cool.

*pun reasons

Three for a Girl

Three for a Girl, watercolor by Amy Crook

Three for a Girl, 6″x6″ watercolor on Fluid watercolor paper

A third installment to one of my favorite series of last year, Three for a Girl continues the Counting Crows theme with another eerie tree and ghostly figure.

The titular girl is almost lost in the mists, fog drifting through and obscuring everything but the tree and its trio of visitors.

Above, you can see how the off-black paint granulates into beautifully textured mist, pigment pooling in the hollows of the watercolor paper. Below, the painting is waiting in a frame, a season and a mood in one small, eerie package.

Untrue Love by Amy Crook, a Consulting Magic short

PS – If you’ve been curious about my writing, the little G-rated “how they met” short Untrue Love is on sale this week — for free!

This story shows us Alex’s first case, when he was an insufferable little university student instead of an insufferable adult. He meets Agent Murielle Lapointe, with whom he’s still working years later in the novels, and they work together to catch a killer.
