Jolteon

Jolteon by Amy Crook, a drawing of the Jolteon Pokemon curled up like a cat, glaring

Jolteon, 7″x5″ pen & ink and Copic marker on paper

Belladonna grumpily posed for this addition to my Pokémon series, an Eeveelution looking spiky, grumpy, and generally adorable. Jolteon is an electric type, and while he’s showing his claws, the zap he could give you is probably the real threat. Unlike most of this commission series, this one’s not shiny, though I did make a shiny variation with the power of Photoshop.

Inktober 2018: Week 1

Tuesday, October 16th, 2018

Autumn winds are blowing and fire season is almost over, which means not only October, Halloween, and Pumpkin Spice, but Inktober! I’m doing one ink drawing per day all month, pulling from a number of prompt lists. This year I’m doing everything in the Artist’s Trading Card size of 3.5″x2.5″ and sticking to black and white with the occasional cheat of grey.

Sardines

Sardines by Amy Crook, whirling layers of silver sardines circling against a turquoise ink backdrop on buff paper

Sardines, 10″x8″ ink and watercolor on Arches cover buff paper

Monterey Bay Aquarium has a room where you can stand and watch sardines endlessly dance in circles around you, living flashes of silver in a meditative display.

The thick, buff-colored paper supports a brilliant turquoise ink wash with the perfect amount of watery softness to its shapes. Layers of abstract fish shine out of the blue in shade of silver that catch the light.

An infinite loop of motion and life!

Above you can see the abstract fishies up close, all light and shadow and overlapping motion. Below, the painting is in its tank, er, frame, on its way to its new home.

Solar Wind

Saturday, October 6th, 2018

Solar Wind by Amy Crook, a watercolor painting of crows and a windblown tree at sunset

Solar Wind, 18″x6″ watercolor on Fluid watercolor paper

A lovely, large panorama of sunset and birds and a windblown tree, this painting is a moment at the edge of night, just as the sun is slipping away below the horizon and off the page.

The clouds reflect the bloody light from below, refracting it into orange and pink as well as red. Five beautiful blackbirds ride the winds of evening, slipping past the tree that autumn’s already caught ahold of and stripped of its summer foliage.

A full foot and a half wide, this painting will need some special framing, but it would make a beautiful, warm addition to any room.

Above, an up-close view of the windswept tree and wispy clouds, as well as one of the five intrepid crows riding the breezes. Below, a very wide shot indeed to encompass this whole panorama.
