Burglar
Saturday, April 5th, 2014
Amidst the piles of shining gold, Bilbo Baggins is caught by the mighty red dragon, Smaug. But it’s not the Arkenstone that Smaug’s worried about — instead, he says, “Burglar, you’ve stolen my heart.” I suppose Bilbo should be glad he’s not lunch, though I’m not sure how he’s going to get out of this one.
Burglar, 7″x5″ pen & ink and Copic marker on paper. The original is sold, but you can get a card to send to your own heart-stealing hobbit here.

Deck the Smaug
Saturday, October 19th, 2013
I’m pretty sure this is the silliest holiday card I’ve ever designed, but I’m such a fan of the silly Smaug/Bilbo art out there on the internet, I had to toss in one of my own. Bilbo raided Smaug’s hoard for bells and gold chains, but I have no idea where he got the giant ribbons or pine boughs for the rest of his cheerful holiday decorating.
At least Smaug will smell delicious while he’s eating you!
Deck the Smaug, 7″x5″ pen & ink and Copic marker on paper. He is, of course, available as a card in my Etsy shop.

Spiral Dragon
Monday, October 7th, 2013
Red Sharpie scales cover the entire page, showing through and informing the shapes of everything above them.
Dragons are often identified by their colors. Red and blue make purple, make violet. This dragon has fire in his eyes and ice along his belly.
Is his breath hot or cold? Is that smoke or mist curling from his mouth? Do those spikes cauterize as they pierce, melt the strongest armor or chill it to shattering, or neither, merely sharp, merely tipped in shining red?
Seemingly endless spiral scales are there to protect him, but as Neil Gaiman says, “dragons have one soft spot, somewhere, always.”
Spiral Dragon, 8″x8″ Sharpie marker, watercolor and iridescent watercolor on Fluid watercolor paper.
Above, you can see the sunlight reflecting off the iridescent sapphire of the dragon’s underbelly, and the way the red Sharpie spirals show through everything. Below, you can see the piece in a frame, just waiting for the perfect wall.

Bilbo and Smaug Bookmark 2
Saturday, May 11th, 2013
Here, there be dragons! Well, dragon. Well, Smaug.
After I sold the first Bilbo & Smaug bookmark, I drew up a second one for someone else who’d asked after it. I went a little more elaborate on this one, intending to use it for promo bookmarks, just like yesterday’s Spock. It’s still sketchy and whimsical, but with more elaborate coloring and a bit of gold to go with the big purple dragon.
If you’d like a bookmark of your own, there’s still a few left from prior Bookmark Weeks!
Bilbo and Smaug Bookmark 2, 7″x2.5″ pen & ink and Copic marker, nfs (sold).

Bilbo and Smaug Bookmark 1
Sunday, March 3rd, 2013
This is the other bookmark that someone already claimed, a wee tiny Hobbit looking quite distressed indeed to be confronted with a dragon. Smaug, on the other hand, looks highly amused by his discovery. I’m definitely going to do some more art for The Hobbit as well, I want to draw some dwarves.
Things will be back to normal tomorrow with another moon for Monday, so I hope you enjoyed this Bookmark Week and picked up one for yourself or a friend!
Bilbo & Smaug Bookmark 1, 7″x1.5″ pen & ink on cardstock, nfs (sold).

Forest Dragon
Monday, March 26th, 2012
I swear, this commission took all the time in the world, but I will admit I’m happy with the results. I was pretty sure I would be once I got it past the ass point, but you never really know until it’s all done. Molly is very happy indeed, and I hope she gets well soon so she can come collect it!
“All I had was the idea of a dragon in a forest and I was so lucky to have Amy bring what I really had in mind to life. And with the snap shots of the progress along the way I got to be more and more excited by the final result. The details of the scales are my favorite part.”
Forest Dragon, 24″x18″ oil paint on canvas, nfs (commission).
I’ve taken a bunch of detail shots for you, just so you can appreciate the awesomeness.
Above, you can see a close-up of the sun shining through the Dragon’s spines and onto the texture, iridescent scales. Below, another shot of sunlight, this time streaming through the trees and making the leaves appear translucent.
Sunlight and shiny things are a bit of a theme, which is apropos for a dragon, I think.
Above, you can see the wings, which are translucent and let the trees behind them show faintly through, as well as the dragon’s ridges. Below, an oblique close-up of the tail so you can see the physical texture of the scales, and the more visual texture on the hoard of gold.
If you’re considering a commission of your own, email me! I’ve got a few things in the queue already, but I’d be happy to talk about putting your painting next in line.

Whimsicle Dragon sketch
Saturday, October 29th, 2011
Look out! Rawr!
This guy was totally inspired by the art in the credits of How to Train Your Dragon. He just wants some fish and a head-scratch, really!
