Five for Silver 2, a Counting Crows painting by Amy Crook

Five for Silver 2, 6″x6″ Primatek watercolor on Fluid watercolor paper

Part five of the eerily monochrome Counting Crows series, we’ve moved along in the rhyme to a whole roost of crows and a bit of silver.

Our ghostly figure this time has a distinctly skeletal appearance, and the crows are all arrayed above her in a perfect murder. The lightning-split tree reaches up through the mist toward what little light has filtered down on this foggy day.

It’s fascinating how fog can reduce the entire world to just you and things you can barely see, isn’t it?

Above, you can see the titular crows arrayed above the faded figure in all her eerie glory. Below, this painting roosts in a frame, waiting to fly to its new home.

Emerald City

Emerald City by Amy Crook

Emerald City, 12.2″x9.1″ watercolor on L’Aquarelle Canson Héritage paper

This city comes with a story — someone asked whether my Rainy City parasol was from the Wizard of Oz, and while that wasn’t, this one is.

Brighter greens and a beautiful orange sunset make this a much brighter city, too. The clouds were dyed a bit green from the glow of the city below, which stays away from mundane building shapes and strays into the fantastic, the strange, and the glorious.

What fantastical land have you always wanted to visit?*

*My answer? All of them

Above, you can see a close-up of one of my favorite buildings in this fantastical cityscape, and a flying monkey circling overhead. Below, this city glows in its frame, the colors a brilliance that will brighten up your space.

Queen of Swords

Queen of Swords, chibi tarot art by Amy Crook

Queen of Swords, 5″x7″ pen & ink and Copic marker on paper

This bodaciously majestic Queen of Swords is a delightful take on the tarot card, with one hand raised up to greet her subjects and her sword held ready in the other.

She’s got little blue swords on her sleeves, and the green brocade of her underskirt is covered in arrows letting you know just where to kneel. At her feet. Where you belong. Everything about her expression tells you she’s completely confident in her ability to make you do what she says.

Truly royal.

I’m giving my wonderful Patreon supporters some bonuses at the $5+ sketch levels this month, so it’s a good time to become a patron!

Fairytale Cottage

Fairytale Cottage by Amy Crook

Fairytale Cottage, 6″x6″ watercolor and gel pen on Fluid watercolor paper

Calling to mind the darker side of fairytales, this shadowy cottage lurks against a rainy sky. The brightness of white clouds and gingerbread detailing is almost unsettling in it sweetness, with everything around it muted and grey.

In a strange reversal, only the frothy white curlicues look solid, while the house and sky seem like mere shadows behind the spirals.

What’s your favorite fairytale, and which ending do you prefer?

Above, you can see up close the slightly raised spirals on the buildings and the softly receding spirals of the clouds, decorating the shadowy secrets held by this confectionary cottage. Below, the frame becomes a window into a dark fairy tale world.

Le Chat Gris, animal art by Amy Crook

Le Chat Gris, 8″x8″ watercolor on Fluid watercolor paper

A third Animal Spirit joins the fox and bunny with this lovely cat.

There’s a saying that all cats are grey in the dark, and this beautiful moggy glows pearly white and grey in the light of a golden harvest moon. The gold is reflected in the cat’s eyes, which hold a little of their own shine.

Bring beauty and whimsy into your home and adopt this grey kitty — you’ll never have to feed it!
