Inktober 2018: Week 1

Tuesday, October 16th, 2018

Autumn winds are blowing and fire season is almost over, which means not only October, Halloween, and Pumpkin Spice, but Inktober! I’m doing one ink drawing per day all month, pulling from a number of prompt lists. This year I’m doing everything in the Artist’s Trading Card size of 3.5″x2.5″ and sticking to black and white with the occasional cheat of grey.

Santa Cat

Santa Cat, ink art by Amy Crook

Santa Cat, 7″x5″ ink on paper

Happy Holidays!

Santa Cat knows exactly what to do during the busy holiday season — sleep.

Rendered in gold-infused grey and red ink, and a softer grey, it takes just a few lines to suggest the shape of a sleeping cat that’s gotten into the Christmas decorations.

This would make a gorgeous holiday decoration, full of whimsy and peace, to bring out year after year.

Above, you can see where there’s a teeny tiny bit of sparkle hiding in the ink. Below, you can enjoy the kitty napping away in its frame, pretending not to acknowledge the pun in the title. Ahem.

Bear and Alphie, pet portraits by Amy Crook

Bear and Alphie, 7″x5″ pen & ink and Copic marker on paper

Bear is a big, old dog and the third puppy to get his portrait done for Courtney! And to finish up  the quartet we have her own cat, Alphie. We decided to draw him as a happy murder baby, despite being asleep in nearly all the photos she sent me. You can practically see his butt wiggle!

Doing caricatures of pets is an interesting exercise! I exaggerated Alphie’s ears and Bear’s big head, and made the body rounder for the kitty, but smaller for the big puppy.

Tails both have the requisite amount of floof, however.

My commissions queue is jam-packed right now, but if you’re interested in reserving a spot drop me a line!

Exploring

Exploring by Amy Crook

Exploring, 6″x6″ pen & ink and watercolor on Fluid watercolor paper

Through the fantastic foliage, the tiger stalks its prey. Or that’s what this adventurous tabby cat is imagining. Colored-ink lines give a cartoonish appearance that’s meant to evoke a Disneyish feel (though Disney is usually a bit more coy about cat butt).

If you’ve ever met a cat, you know this is a very common view, however, and soon enough it becomes commonplace. The real question isn’t about the end of the cat facing us, but where the other end is headed off to and what it will find it its explorations.

Pattern Cat

Pattern Cat by Amy Crook

Pattern Cat, 7″x5″ ink and watercolor on Arches cover white paper

This basking cat is covered in a pattern of repeating arcs which create a larger sense of pattern when viewed from a distance. It’s got its face up into the golden sunlight, with shimmering amethyst darkness all around.

There’s a little hint that perhaps the cat is scenting something good — your dinner, probably — but for now it’s just enjoying the moment.

Cats are, after all, solar powered.

Podovich

Podovich, catnap art by Amy Crook

Podovich, 7″x5″ Copic marker on paper

It’s Caturday – a wild Pod appears! Only this time he’s been evolved into a Russian Blue instead of his usual sleek black, hence the name.

Podovich is curled up in a fuzzy ball with just one pink ear to break up the soft, inviting grays. The white pillowy surface he’s sleeping on carries just a hint of shadow, as of course he’s found himself someplace flooded with light for his nap.

That must be why he’s got his paw over his eyes.

Where in your life do you need a kitty to remind you of the value of catnaps?
