Patreon sketches for December 2019 requests

Thursday, January 30th, 2020

I’ve decided to stick with my new standard size for Patreon sketches from now on, so everyone gets a standard ACEO (artist card, edition original) aka trading card size piece of art when they make a request. Patrons also get to see exclusive photos, including cat pics, works in progress, and other such shenanigans. Plus, they get the warm feeling of contentment that they support the arts every month!

I’ve also been doing some figure sketch practice, so expect to see more actual people at some point! I’m pretty happy with how the sketches are coming out, even if I haven’t done a ton of them yet.

My commissions queue is full, so I’m working hard on clearing the decks so I can open them up again, as well as finally editing my newest book (it’s so close to done omg), and finishing up some other long-overdue projects. I don’t think it’s possible to feel caught up anymore, but I have hopes that someday I’ll have space to breathe and take on new work!

In the meantime, the January requests post is still open, if you want to join us on Patreon!

Forgiveness

Forgiveness by Amy Crook, abstract art in the Aglow series quoting Desmond Tutu

Forgiveness, 12″x12″ watercolor on paper

Desmond Tutu wrote an entire book titled No Future Without Forgiveness, and the title resonated with the soft, earthy swirls of this painting. There’s two different pieces in my Aglow series this month, and this one called out for a quote about forgiveness to float atop the warm spiral.

A patron commented that it looked like milk being stirred into tea, which fits perfectly with the feeling of warmth and care — for oneself, for others, for the world — that I had hoped to convey.

Be Kind

Be Kind by Amy Crook, abstract art with word art text

Be Kind, 8″x8″ watercolor on paper

The second new painting in my Aglow series this month, this one’s got a quote from another wonderful human being who inspires us to be better humans — Mr. Rogers.

There are three ways to ultimate success: The first way is to be kind. The second way is to be kind. The third way is to be kind.

The message was shortened for this small painting, but still contains his threefold wisdom: be kind. be kind. be kind.

I’m doing one ink drawing per day all month, pulling from a number of prompt lists. This year I’m doing everything in the Artist’s Trading Card size of 3.5″x2.5″ and sticking to black and white with the occasional cheat of grey.

To Have Ambition

To Have Ambition, word art by Amy Crook

To Have Ambition, 7″x5″ ink and pencil on paper

Who would have thought that cheesy ’80s pop music would spawn further art? The Gang of Four song I Love a Man in a Uniform has always held this little gem that, on some tired days, feels like my life motto.

To have ambition is my ambition

This word art piece uses beautiful sparkling inks and has elaborate decorations in varying stages of doneness to represent the unfulfilled ambitions — from fully realized illumunation around the capital to the barely-sketched design beneath the final word, process becomes product.

Above, you can see the shiny embedded in pretty much all of the ink used in this piece. Below, you can see how it looks in a frame, a gorgeous example of artistic hopefulness.
