Waning

mixed media artwork of a blue-purple twilight with a waning gibbous moon, tree, and birds

Waning, 5″x7″ mixed media on paper

This misprint had an alignment issue that made it all sky and no earth. I couldn’t resist painting in the very end of twilight in rich blue and fading violet. The moon is a special iridescent paint that looks white at some angles and lavender at others. The tree has some intriguing physical texture, painting over with soft-body acrylic paint, and its details were extended into a network of lacy growth.

There’s a few little birds in the sky as well, hidden mostly behind the mist of tiny dots that might be fireflies or snowflakes or even a light rain reflecting moonlight at the viewer.

Every part of this artwork got a touch of new life, from the waning gibbous moon to the color-washed streaks in the sky.

Above, you can see the way the paint shines, the moon going purple and the tree’s texture picking up the golden sunlight. Below, this piece is in a frame and happily showing itself off for you.

Artifacts of the Resolution

a mixed media painting of a tree, crows, and a ghost

Artifacts of the Resolution, 5″x7″ mixed media on paper

Making prints work out is always an interesting challenge with a new program and a new printer.

Instead of recycling this low-res misprint, I used my mineral-based watercolors to paint over it. I added the cloudy russet sunset and gave the tree texture, body, and new details. All of the birds stayed at their original resolution, which gives the painting its name.

Look, I can’t be expected to resist a pun that good.

Above, you can see up close the motion-blur of the branches next to the clear pixelation on the birds, as though they’re visiting from some other, lower-resolution reality. Below, the painting is resting in a frame, waiting to be sent to someone new.

April 2021 Patreon Sketch Cards

Wednesday, July 7th, 2021

Having standardized the sketch size to these pre-cut ATC/ACEO cards makes my life so much easier — they come in vellum for drawing, watercolor paper, and some cool new stuff like Yupo synthetic substrate. It gives me a lot of room for play! Which I did with several of these that weren’t for anyone specific, heh.

6 sketch cards by Amy Crook

From the top left:

  • Do Good Recklessly, a recent tumblr meme
  • Capybaras for Rebecca S
  • A wee Concentric doodle to play with some of my new watercolors
  • Bats and Mushrooms and Sun and idk man, sometimes you just gotta paint mushrooms I guess.
  • Purple dragon for Andria, who wanted to have a golden hoard of their very own, which was pretty easy since they are very wee
  • Amy B asked for a kitten and got a blobcat with a Christmas tree tail, which is a feature of kittens of a certain age that I find delightful. It has brought you a mouse toy like the mighty hunter it is, and is all fluffed up about it.

From the top left:

  • Amber asked for “seasonal (holiday) allergies” and I may have chosen to tease her husband.
  • A is for Amy wants to play with her yupo paper some more.
  • Roxanne asked for Falcon & the Winter Solider and apparently this is what my brain wanted.
  • Rey asked for “conditionally huggable” and of course I had to draw a hedgehog.

I love my Patreon supporters with all my heart — thanks, you guys! You’re the best.

sketch cards of a cat, a crow, a snorlax, and a bat

4 sketch cards by Amy Crook

From the top left:

  • Booskerdu asked for lilac cats, and got this mostly-monochrome blobcat. I even got the child to help paint the sugilite blob that got turned into a cat! I gave it a few tiny enhancements with some amethyst paint for shading, but I don’t feel I cheated too badly on my b&w commitment.
  • Kim asked for Cigfran and got this shy fellow painted in full flight.
  • Eric asked for Snorlax and got this slightly pop-art colored Posca marker meme.
  • Amy B asked for a wintry bat, and got this little dude in his scarf, chillin’ on a snowman’s head. And yeah, I cheated here, too, and added the tiniest bit of orange watercolor, because reasons.
sketch cards of a wolf, a half dragon, and a kobold with a cat on its head

3 sketch cards by Amy Crook

From the top left:

  • Corinne wanted something inspired by a story we both like, and I felt like making an obscure meme joke, so if you don’t get this, don’t worry — you don’t have to. Remember, they’re not temporary dogs, they’re werewolves.
  • Rebecca S asked for Dragon Tony and gets this ridiculous chibi masterpiece.
  • My BFF Jeff asked for “us” so he gets a stolen joke from a Munchkin card, and his icon plus my inner lazy kitty.

I’m not sure how these didn’t get done until April or put on the blog until May, but time has become meaningless in 2021. I’m getting more caught up, however, so expect to see at least two more sketch card posts in the coming weeks!

As always, you can become a patron to request your own sketches and spin the wheel of creativity.

String Theory

String Theory, 6″x6″ watercolor on paper

This weird little abstract sold to one of my Patreon supporters when it previewed, and got to skip the gallery experience entirely. It’s definitely a painting in which different people see different things, but the swirling layers of color and texture are certainly mesmerising.

It started as so many things of mine do as a background painted and left to sit on a shelf, while the back of my brain processed ideas for what to do with it. Eventually I went to pick texture out of the color and then add color back in to the texture with shades of purple and a hint of blue. There’s even a touch of shimmer along the right side, which will subtly shine in the right light.

April Patreon Sketches

Wednesday, June 10th, 2020

I continue to be not dead yet! Things are a bit mad here, and somehow I’ve managed to go over my commissions limit again without meaning to, which means the queue is firmly closed with two people on the waiting list right now. That said, Patreon supporters continue to get their sketches! And someday I’ll have three seconds to put together a sale of all these little ACEOs I have lying around that were either for someone who doesn’t get to keep their card, or just random doodles I did while avoiding the actual requests.

ACEO sketch cards by Amy Crook

  • Mal modeled “frolic” for Andria but apparently disapproved of the result
  • Deinvati asked for Cavill and got a leonine Geralt
  • the silver and black abstract was just my inner goth playing around
  • and Rebecca asked for “space” and got a whole galaxy

ACEO sketch cards by Amy Crook

  • Kim asked for an itchy hedgehog and got this silly thing
  • Jeff wanted Captain Christopher Pike and I liked his giant grey bouffant
  • Grace asked for a rainbow & is a Virgo, so she got the constellation hiding in this textured rainbow-flag-ish bit of canvas paper
  • sekrit patron Rey asked for FREEDOM! in reference to finally leaving his terrible contract job, and I was late but it’s very shiny
  • sekrit patron Amber asked for Goosfraba and then had to explain it, lol

ACEO sketch cards by Amy Crook

  • Eric asked for “not so sekrit” now that he’s an official patron, and got spideybutt
  • Corinne asked for Raccoon (her cat), and after sending me 17 pics I ended up using one out of my txts from 2 months ago heh

Jealous? Get your own next month!

Feb & March 2020 Patreon sketches

Thursday, May 14th, 2020

Back in Feb & March, in the before times and the between times, some Patreon patrons gave me sketch requests! I’ve been slowly filling these as the months go along (they normally get filled the month after they’re requested), but forgetting to share them here.

And so, a lot of art with very little explanation!
